Data & Privacy Notice
Invited alpha. Last updated 2026-10-15.
This is a plain-language summary of what TradeTape records, where it goes, and the choices you have. It is not a formal privacy policy or legal advice — a full policy will accompany any public launch. Questions: support@tradetape.org.
What TradeTape records
When you record, TradeTape captures three things, together:
- Screen video of your primary monitor — the whole screen. There is no window or region picker yet, so anything visible on that monitor is recorded.
- Your spoken narration— audio from your computer’s default microphone.
- A text transcript of that narration, so your words are searchable.
Because you narrate account balances, P&L, and position sizes out loud, we treat all three — video, audio, and transcript — as sensitive financial information, at the same level.
TradeTape also stores:
- Trades you import or enter.Importing a Tradovate fills export saves each fill’s time, contract, side, quantity, price, and commission. The file itself is read once and not kept, and no broker account number is stored.
- Trade ideas you create, and the links between ideas, trades, and clips.
- Your email address, which is how you sign in.
Where your data lives
Your recordings are stored in private, per-account storage. The video lives in Cloudflare R2. Transcripts, trades, ideas, and account details live in a Supabase Postgres database. Access is enforced per account — no other user, and no public visitor, can reach your data — and the links that play your videos are signed and expire within minutes.
TradeTape does not sell your data or share it for advertising, and the app has no analytics or advertising trackers. When something breaks, a technical error report is sent to Sentry (see below).
Companies that handle your data
TradeTape runs on a small number of providers. Each one handles only what it needs to do its job:
- Supabase
- Database and sign-inTranscripts, trades, ideas, account details
- Cloudflare
- Video storageYour recordings
- Vercel
- Hosts the TradeTape websiteThe requests your browser and desktop app make
- OpenAI
- TranscriptionThe audio of each recording, never the video
- Resend
- Delivers sign-in emailsYour email address
- Sentry
- Error reportsTechnical details of errors in the website and desktop app (such as the app version and, for the desktop app, the Windows version), and your account ID. Never your recordings, transcripts or your computer's name.
Transcription
To turn your narration into searchable text, TradeTape sends only the audio — never the video— to OpenAI’s transcription API. The audio is pulled out of the recording on TradeTape’s server just for that request, and that temporary copy is removed afterwards. Under the Data Processing Agreement TradeTape has signed with OpenAI (effective 2026-07-07):
- Your audio is not used to trainOpenAI’s models.
- OpenAI keeps the audio for up to 30 days — for abuse monitoring — and then deletes it.
OpenAI does offer a zero-retention option, but not at TradeTape’s current scale, so the 30-day window applies. This notice will be updated if that changes.
On your PC
While you record, and until the upload finishes, your clip is saved in %LOCALAPPDATA%\TradeTape\recordings. The desktop app deletes that local copy automatically once the upload is confirmed.
If an upload keeps failing — or TradeTape refuses it because it is over the beta limits below — the app stops retrying but keeps the fileso the recording isn’t lost. You can delete it from that folder yourself. Your sign-in is saved in Windows Credential Manager until you sign out. The install guide covers removing both when you uninstall.
Beta limits
During the beta, each account can record 5 clips a day (US Eastern), up to 5 minutes each, plus 10 add-on clips a day of up to 1 minute each.
Deleting your data
Recordings. Deleting a recording hides it straight away and moves it to a trash. You can restore it from the Recovery page for 30 days. After 30 days, the recording — its video, audio, transcript and details — is permanently deleted.
Ideas. Deleting an idea works the same way. Its trades and clips stay in your account, unlinked, and you can restore the idea for 30 days. After 30 days, the idea is permanently deleted.
Trades. You can’t delete individual trades or imported fills yet. They are removed when you delete your account.
Your account. Email support@tradetape.org from the address you sign in with and ask for your account to be deleted. TradeTape will delete your account and everything in it — recordings (including anything in the trash), transcripts, trades, and ideas — within 7 days, sign your desktop app out, and confirm by email.
What deletion can’t reach straight away:
- The database is backed up daily, and backups are kept for 7 days. Deleted data can remain in those backups until they expire.
- Audio already sent to OpenAI follows OpenAI’s retention above (up to 30 days). TradeTape can’t delete it on demand.
- Error reports already sent to Sentry, which carry your account ID, are kept by Sentry for up to 30 days. TradeTape can’t delete them on demand.
Before you record
Recording captures whatever is on your primary display — including notification toasts(broker alerts, email previews, 2FA codes, chat messages). Turn on Do Not Disturb / Focus before you record so a toast doesn’t land in your clip. TradeTape warns you if you start a recording with Do Not Disturb off; see the install guide for the one-time scheduled-DND setup.
